About Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic acid)
1) Promoting collagen synthesis
Vitamin C acts as a co-factor for the proline and lysine hydroxylates that stabilise the collagen molecule tertiary structure, and it also promotes collagen gene expression.
2) Removing free radicals and neutralising toxic oxidants
Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant. It neutralises and removes oxidants, such as those found in environmental pollutants and after exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Vitamin C also increases the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes.
3) Inhibiting melanogenesis
Vitamin C has been shown to decrease melanin synthesis both in cultured melanocytes and in-vivo.
